Major Events in 2005

  • January 15

    IAP was elected to be the training base for the CAS-TWAS scholarship winner. Altogether 32 institutes from CAS become the first . In five years, IAP will receive and train master and doctor students from the third worlds. This will enhance the collaboration between our institute and the institutions from the third world.

  • January 17-19

    The 4th Workshop of Regional Climate Model Studies was held at Seoul National University in Seoul, Korea, January 17-19, 2005. This workshop is supported by the BK21 program of the Korean Government Ministry of Education, the Eco-technopia 21 project of the Korean Government Ministry of Environment, and the Meteorological and Earthquake R&D program of the Korea Meteorological Administration and it focuses on continuous discussion of the 10-year regional climate model simulations forced by the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and general circulation model data, and regional climate model scenarios resulting from global warming. Headed by Prof. Fu Congbin, the chief scientist of the Asian Regional Model Intercomparison Project , 6 scientists from RCE-TEA attended the workshop and gave their presentations at the workshop.

  • February 19-20

    Workshop on ¡°Regional Academies Networking and Mechanism of Disaster Mitigation after the Tsunami¡± was held on 19-20. The project on disaster mitigation then was initiated. Prof. Wang Angsheng, director of National Center of Disaster Mitigation is appointed as one of the chief scientists of this project.

  • May 19

    The collaborative agreement was signed between IAP and University of Inji in Korea. The visit headed by Director Wang Huijun of IAP was a quite successful one. The collaboration is based on training students exchanging researchers from both sides.

  • May 30

    Prof. Shi Guangyu was elected to be the member of the IGBP-SOLAS-SSC on the Fifth Scientific Steering Committee Meeting.

  • June 8-9

    The Third Science team Meeting under the MOST (Ministry of Science and Technology of China)-DOE (Department of Energy of USA) Agreement on ¡°Climate Sciences) was held on 8-9 June. There are altogether 38 presentations being made in the five sessions namely, Contemporary climate diagnostics, Greenhouse gases measurements and analysis, Effects of climate change, Contemporary climate modeling and prediction and Historical climate. The presentations and discussion at the meeting has helped further deepen the understanding between Chinese scientists and their American colleagues, creating better foundation and bases for their future cooperation in climate science study.

  • August 2-11

    The IAMAS 2005 Scientific Assembly was held in Beijing, China at the Beijing International Convention Center (BICC) from Tuesday, August 2 through Thursday, August 11, 2005. 841 scientists and students from 54 countries attended the conference and gave over 1000 presentations. It is the first time that the IAMAS has been held in the developing country of the world.

  • August 29-31

    The Fifth IAP-METRI Joint Research Workshop was held in Yanji. Since IAP and METRI signed formally ¡°the Agreement of Cooperation between IAP and METRI¡± in 2001, IAP and METRI hold a regular workshop between the two sides at each year alternatively by each side. It has stimulated the collaboration and academic exchanges between the researchers in the two institutions. More and more scientists from universities express interests in participating in the Joint Workshop. Their participation will enlarge and strengthen the cooperation between IAP and METRI.

  • September 29

    The collaborative agreement was signed between IAP and the Pakistan Meteorological Department, Headquarters Office in Pakistan Embassy in Beijing. Prof. Hong Yanchao and Dr. Lu
    Riyu, assistant of IAP director and Doctor Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudbry, director of Pakistan Meteorological Department, Headquarters Office attended the ceremony.

  • October 20

    Prof. Fu Congbin was elected to be the executive member of the ICSU on the 28th Annual Meeting of ICSU. He was the third person to be the top position in ICSU. The previous two members from China are Prof. Sun Honglie and Prof. Qian Yizhi.

  • November 15-18

    CTWF Workshop on Land Surface Models and Their Applications was held in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province,China. The main theme for the Workshop is "Land Surface Models and Their Applications", which is organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The workshop includes the following topics: Development of land surface model and its uncertainties, Land surface - atmosphere interactions and their impacts on climate and environment, Vegetation-Soil-Hydrology processes and their interactions, Water resources issues in arid and semi-arid regions, Application of remote sensing technique in the study of land-surface and hydrological processes, Land data assimilation.

Major Events in 2006

  • January 9
    The opening ceremony of Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Study £¨MAIRS£©International Project Office was held in IAP. Prof. Congbin Fu, Scientific Steering Committee Chair of MAIRS, presided over this ceremony. Mr. Roland Fuchs, the director of International START announced the establishment of MAIRS International Project Office.
  • July 22-31
    IAP delegation with 9 persons led by Director Wang Huijun visited Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Obukhov, Russian Academy of Science and Hydro- meteorological University of Leningrad. The academic conference on Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry was held. On behalf of the IAP and Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics respectively, Director Wang Huijun and Director G.S.Golitsyn of Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics singed the collaborative agreement.
  • August 10-15
    The international workshop on Asian Dust and Ocean Ecosystem (ADOES) with Asian Surface Ocean and Lower Atmosphere Study (SOLAS) was held in Ulanhot, Inner Mongolia. This workshop is financially supported by National Scientific Fund Committee£¨NSFC£©and IAP-CAS. More than 30 scientists from China, Japan, Korea and USA participated in the workshop.
  • October 16-18
    The fifth CAS-TWAS-WMO FORUM (CTWF) Workshop on Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment (GODAE) was held in Xijiao Hotel, Beijing. The main theme for the Workshop is "Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment ", which is organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The workshop aims to coordinate and develop the research and application of ocean observation, Data Assimilation and forecasting.
  • November 7-8
    World Climate Research Planning / Officers£¬Chairs and Directors (WCRP/OCD) Meeting & WCRP/Networking Workshop was held in IAP. The officers including Doctor J. Church, Chair of United Science Committee of WCRP, Prof. V. Ramaswamy, vice Chair of United Science Committee of WCRP, Doctor A. Henderson-Sellers, Office director and so on¡£Prof. Wu Guoxiong, the officer of United Science Committee of WCRP, Prof. Lin Zhaohui, secretary-general of Chinese WCRP Committee and Prof. LU Riyu, deputy secretary-general participated in the workshop.
  • November 9
    The new collaborative agreement was signed between IAP and Science and Engineering College of Hongkong City University. And the collaborative laboratory was established.
  • November 10
    The Initial Science Plan (ISP) of MAIRS was formally presented to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the China Association of Science and Technology, China Meteorological Administration, Beijing Normal University, to the ESSP and the four Global Change Programs with their joint projects and core projects in Beijing Conference Centre. The Statement of the Open Science Conference on Global Environmental Change mentioned the new research program of MAIRS as a response to threats posed to populations and ecosystems of monsoon Asia. It is the first major international corporation project in the Global Change field initiated and leaded by China.

Major Events in 2007

  • March 6-9
    The third Surface Ocean-Lower Atmosphere Study£¨SOLAS£©opening workshop was held in Xiamen. It was financially supported by the CAS and National Natural Science Fund Committee. Prof. Shi Guangyu was the Chair of the Scientific Steering Committee Meeting.
  • April 23-25
    Asian Monsoon Year08 (AMY08£©international workshop initiated by CAS and CMA was held in Beijing. The aim of this workshop is to solve the scientific problem of international research planning of Asian Monsoon Year08.
  • May 10-14
    The Seventh IAP-METRI Joint Research Workshop was held in Qufu, Shandong province. The members of Korea delegation was mainly from METRI, KMA, the main Korean University such as Chaosun University, Pusan University etc. Altogether 34 scientists from China and Korea gave their presentations at the workshop. Since 2001, IAP and METRI takes turns in holding one joint workshop each year. It has stimulated the collaboration and academic exchanges between the researchers from the two institutes. More and more scientists from universities express their interests in participating in the Joint Workshop. The workshop strengthens and extends the cooperation between IAP and METRI.
  • May 15-19
    The second International Symposium on Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry between China and Russia was held in Qufu, Shandong province. Altogether 29 scientists gave their presentations at the symposium. The presentations mainly focus on the remote sensing, atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, boundary weather and climate and global change etc. According to the collaborative agreement signed in 2006, IAP and RIAP takes turns in holding one joint workshop each year
  • May 21
    The opening ceremony of China-Russia Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics was held in Beijing. Director Wang Huijun, director Golitsyn of Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Russian Academic Sciences, and more than 100 scientists and officials from two sides attended the ceremony.
  • June 1-5
    ADAM Stakeholder Workshop on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation strategies for Inner Mongolia was held in Inner Mongolia. ADAM is one of the projects supported by the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) of European Union (EU).And it aims to research the strategies of adaptation and Mitigation of climate change, to support and develop European climate policy. There are 26 institutes from 15 countries participating in the project which was initiated by IAP and working on the case research of Inner Mongolia.
  • July 1-14
    The 24th International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) was held in Italy and Prof. Wu Guoxiong was selected as the Chair of IAMAS in the re-election of Congress of IAMAS on July the 10th. It was the first time that Chair of IAMAS was from Asia since IAMAS had established for more than 70 years.
  • June 12-19
    Prof. Fu Congbing, from RCE-TEA of IAP, together with Prof. Ching_Yen Tsay, from National Taiwan University and Prof. Yssunari, from Japan Nayoya University, successfully held branch meeting on the Global Change, Asian monsoon and Extreme Weather and Climate of the 21ST Pacific Science Congress. About 40 scientists from 10 countries and regions such as China, Chinese Taiwan, America, and Japan and so on attended the branch meeting.
  • June 17
    Prof. Fu Congbin was elected to be the chair of the Pacific Science Association (PSA) on the 21st Pacific Scientific workshop. He was the second person in China to be the top position in PSA and the first one from China was Prof. ZHOU Guangzhao.
  • June 18-20
    The sixth University-Asia workshop 2007£¨UAW 2007£©was held in Beijing. The main topic of this workshop was the Research & Development, Application and Evaluation of Meteorological and Environmental System model. The teachers and students in 13 universities from Chinese mainland, Chinese Taibei, Korea, Japan and American submitted abstract and there were more than 100 participants.
  • ¡¡June 19
    The collaborative agreement was formally signed between IAP and Institute of Upper Air Atmospheric Physics of Belgium. The collaboration will strengthen the academic communication between two sides and the young researchers and graduate students will have more opportunities to go to Belgium to collaborate with the Belgian experts in the field.
  • July 31
    The collaborative agreement was formally signed between IAP and Meso-scale Meteorological Institute of University of Oklahoma. The collaboration includes the exchange of the researchers from both side, the collaborative research and joint paper publication etc.
  • August 13-17
    The thirteenth International Atmospheric Electrics Assembly was held in Beijing, China. Prof. ZHOU Xiuji and Prof. Lu Daren, members of CAS, was the honorary president. Prof. QIE Xiushu was the president of the assembly. About 130 experts and scholars from over 30 countries in the world and 100 experts and scholars from China in this field participated in the assembly and about 300 paper were received.¡¡
  • August 20-24
    The tenth International statistical climatology Assembly was held in Friendship Hotel in Beijing. It was hosted by IMSC and IAP. Prof. YAN Zhongwei and ZHU Jiang in IAP was the leader of organizing committee of the meeting.
  • October 20
    Owing to the great contribution to the global and Asian monsoon research, Prof. Fu Congbin, member of CAS, was awarded Honorary Professor by the University of Gothenburg, the famous university in Sweden. It was reported that Hillary Clinton from America also got the honor at the same time.
  • October 24-28
    The third Asian Dust and Ocean Ecosystem (ADOES) workshop was held in Yunnan province. It was hosted by IAP, and joint hosted by Chinese Oceanic University and Yunann Meteorological Bureau.
